Hope that this year will be the best ever for you and your families.

I noticed that the DOW Jones opened the year below it's opening 5 years ago. I meet many members who have been upset about the performance of their portfolios. Many have moved IRA, 401k, CD money to KofC annuities for the safer and more secure investment, especially those near and in retirement who are more concerned about the return of their money than the return on their money. For many the Single Premium Life Policy is a bonanza as it increases the death benefit and provides a tax free benefit and is not tied up in an estate at death.

Many of those younger members cling to their group term policies at work believing that is all they need. Many others have seen their coverage erode or their premiums grow this past year as employers seek to cut their cost.

Is it any wonder that in a year when many markets and companies suffered the Knights of Columbus set new records for growth and coverage?

Membership Game Plan – Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council, 2011-2012

Hello! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Joe Halle and I am the recently-appointed Membership Director for our council. I am a single parent of four wonderful children and one grandchild. We have been members of Saint Francis of Assisi parish since 2008. I’ve been working for Hillsborough County BOCC as a Safety Consultant for the past five years and have worked in the Safety career field for the past 22 years.

The following is my "Game Plan" initiative of ideas to meet & exceed our council’s membership goals for the 2011-2012 Fraternal Year:

1. Hold at least two major membership blitz drives once we coordinate the dates with our council’s officers, including one during the parish ministry drive.

2. Offer membership to our priests who aren’t yet knights, as well as our sponsored seminarian.

3. Make our council more VISIBLE to our parish membership:
a. Establish a generic “combo-card,” combining a "business card" and "recruitment card" so we can provide information and contact options to our potential candidates.

b. Create an email address for interested applicants, and advertise this address on the parish website, our council blog, and print it on the new “combo-card.”

c. Enlist the support of our Fraternal Agent, Tom Cummings, to publicize the benefits of our order’s insurance and financial service products.

d. Create a communication connection with the parish by:
i. Articles & constant identification within the parish bulletin.
ii. Articles & items on the council blog and parish website.
iii. Encouraging our members to increase visibility by wearing their "Red Shirts" at parish activities.

4. Hold & encourage informal recruitment efforts by other means to be discussed within the council.

5. Consider creating a "Round Table" connection with the James Haley VA Hospital and Residence Home. The Fourth Degree already provides support there, and Father David works there as well.

6. Continue to work at connecting the men of our parish’s Spanish community into our council, by means of open communication and a continuous welcome mat of care from our council.

7. Reach out to the young men of our parish, through the various organizations they participate in, to make them aware of the KofC and our council.

This list is a big one, and I am always open to your ideas, too. Our grand knight has pledged his support to these ideas, and I will also reach out to you for your help. If we can do at least some or most of these, I know we will exceed our council’s membership goals. By working together, I know we can advance both in membership and visibility to serve our parish, our community and each other.

Grand Knight’s Report – July 2011
A New Fraternal Year

“Thank you!” I can’t say it enough to you, the members of the Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council. We just wrapped up a very successful Fraternal Year 2010-2011! We were very active in serving the Church, the Community, our Families, our Council, our Youth, and the Pro-Life cause. In fact, during the annual convention of the Florida State Council last April, our council received commendation in five of our six program areas – more than any other council in our district. Given the high quality of our sister councils, that says a lot about what we accomplished last year.

On top of that, we finished the year with our first-ever council-hosted First Degree ceremony, where we welcomed five new members (Neil Black, Nate Halle, Bob Luddington, Jared Wilbur, and Michael Wilbur). This allowed us to meet our recruitment goal, which was the final goal we needed to achieve to qualify for Star Council once again!

Like I said, a successful year! Thank you for making it happen!

With the old year ended, a new year thus begins, and things are looking good for another year of service and success. We find ourselves in a new district, as districts in the state now each have four councils. We’re now in District 40, which includes us, Nativity, St. Clement, and St. Stephen. Our previous district, number 35, also included Prince of Peace and St. Anne. We also have a new District Deputy – former warden Julio Alvarez (PGK of St. Stephen) has filled Rick Hughes’ shoes and is looking forward to the new year.

I’d like to thank everyone who attended the Officers’ Installation on June 24th. We retained all of last year’s officer corps (thank you, brothers!), with the addition of John Angelo to replace Charlie Homs as trustee, and also our membership director, Joe Halle. Joe is already making big plans, and I’m confident that he will lead us to really grow the council this year.

There will be no social in July, as we are currently assessing the proper number of socials to conduct this year. Therefore, our first activity of the year (outside of council meetings) will be on Friday, August 8th – the mass and reception welcoming our new associate pastor, Father Martin, and congratulating Father Chris on his retirement and Father Mick on his elevation to pastor. Mass is scheduled for 7pm, with the reception to follow. Knights will likely be needed to set up, tear down, and clean up, and even if you can’t help with that I hope you and your families can attend. Please wear your KofC pins, so we can show our priests just how many knights are supporting them and the parish.

Please stay tuned! I hope to get details of the mass and reception out to you very soon and also will get a calendar of events out to you – as soon as it is completed.

Thank you to brother Rich Brown and DGK John Mabe for picking up and storing the "crosses for the innocents" on Saturday morning, and thanks also to brother Sam Puleo for being available to help.

Thank you also to brother Mike Garrido who organized the Citizens With Disabilities Campaign, and to DGK John Mabe and brothers Chuck Mulhern, Joe Halle, Ron Zeigler and PGK Miguel Molina, who joined Mike and me Saturday at the Seffner Publix as we gave out Tootsie Rolls and collected more than $500 to be split between Special Olympics and Morning Star School. Way to go guys!

A special thank you to brothers Chuck Mulhern and Robert Voor, who each took time over the past few days to visit with our brother Charlie Homs at Central Park Rehab on Kings Avenue in Brandon. Please try to visit him (especially between now and May 4th, since Carrie is out of town) if you have even a few minutes to spare. He is in Room 74, around the back of the building.

Congratulations and thank you to brother Joe Holle, who this weekend volunteered to serve as our council's membership director! The last requirement we need to meet for Star Council is to recruit at least another five members before June 30th. With Joe on board I am confident we will do just that. Please help him however you can when he calls on you!

Finally - Please remember our bi-monthly turn at "Feed the Needy" is 2-6pm this Wednesday, 4/27 and our council Social is this Friday, 4/29 at 7pm. Please reply to this message to let me know if you are coming to either (or both) of these events.

Knights of Columbus Tops $80 Billion of Life Insurance in Force

The Knights of Columbus insurance program passed a major milestone today
when total insurance in force exceeded $80 billion. The amount of life
insurance in force has doubled in just over a decade, from $40 billion in
2000.

The organization was established in 1882 as a fraternal benefit society,
with one of its primary aims to enable members to protect their families
with life insurance. Today, the K of C has more than 1.8 million members
in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America, the Caribbean,
Philippines and Poland.

The Knights of Columbus has more than $17 billion in assets and ranks in
the Fortune 1000 list of America’s largest companies. It is one of only
five insurers in North America to receive the highest possible rating for
financial stability from both Standard & Poor’s (AAA) and A.M. Best (A++).

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, who assumed the role of CEO in 2000,
cites the record sales growth as resulting from the organization’s
philosophy of sustainable investment and ethical business practices.

“Despite the difficult economic conditions in the United States, the
Knights of Columbus has maintained its strength, and has improved its
standing relative to the insurance industry as a whole,” Anderson said.
“There is no higher rated insurer than the Knights of Columbus, and we
have every confidence in our continued success because we have a
fundamentally solid business model, which continues to serve us well.”

One of the most active charitable groups in the United States, Knights of
Columbus members last year set records despite the weak economy by
providing nearly 69 million hours of charitable service and more than $151
million in donations to charitable causes. Cumulative figures show that,
during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated more than
$1.36 billion to charity, and provided nearly 640 million hours of
volunteer service in support of charitable initiatives.

Brothers,

Many senior members ask me "How do I know what coverage I'll need to
protect my wife later in life?"
Here are a few questions to consider:
What will happen to your pension?
What will happen to your Social Security?
How much 401k money will there be after the taxman takes his share?
How will you cover final expenses?
Most wives lose at least a major portion of the pension and the 2nd Social
Security check. The 401k is reduced by 15-33%. Funerals range from $5K to
___K.

Do I need for Long Term Care Insurance?
Recently two Brother Knights and a spouse have experienced long stays
in nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities. Ask them or their spouse
and children what they think after paying out tens of thousands of
dollars.

Are my wills, living wills, health care surrogacies, powers of attorney,
beneficiary designation forms up to date? Do I know where they are?

Welcome to the holiday season! I hope that you and your loved ones enjoyed a blessed Thanksgiving. Among the blessings I remain thankful for are family and friends, including our wonderful parish and council.

November wrap-up
After our monthly meeting on Nov. 4th we opened the month by adding four new members to our ranks. Sam Puleo, Tom Sheppard and Joe Halle took their First Degree at Nativity on Nov. 9th, and Tim O’Connor shortly thereafter transferred in from Nativity. Each of them is eager to expand their faith and help others through their work in the council. When you get the chance, please make it a point to welcome them aboard!
On November 12th, we partnered with the parish’s Spanish community, the Legion of Mary, and others from the parish at the spaghetti dinner to benefit the Luz Fund – brother Chuck Mulhern’s charity which provides medical care and medicines to an impoverished region in Peru. While I don’t have a final count, we fed more than 150 paying customers, sold a lot of wine and beer, and also sold drawing tickets for a Caribbean island vacation. Most everyone considered the event an absolute success. If you were one of the many knights who helped out, please accept my sincere thanks.
Finally, we significantly replenished the council’s coffers with a successful sale of car magnets and Christmas cards in our annual “Keep Christ in Christmas” campaign. Over the second and third weekends of the month we sold $868 worth of magnetic car signs, Christmas cards and lapel pins, netting $532 after the cost of buying new inventory. We sold out of cards and pins, but still have a supply of magnets which we can continue to make available this Christmas season and sell next year, too.

On to December
With the last Friday of the November falling the day after Thanksgiving, we chose to cancel the social for November. We face the same situation in December, and so we have moved the December social to Friday the 17th, at 7pm. It will be pot luck as usual, and at this writing we are planning to make it another “family game night.” So, bring your family and your favorite game, and we hope to have a lot of fun.
Other than that, please plan to help out at “Feed the Needy,” from 2pm to 6pm on Wednesday, Dec. 29th at the church kitchen.
With that, please accept my family’s prayers and wishes that you and your family will enjoy a very merry and Spirit-filled Christmas! Thanks again for all you do through the Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council.

An eventful October
Even before our general business meeting on October 7th, we were off and running in what turned out to be a very active month for our council! First off, on Saturday Oct. 2nd Youth Committee director Tony Cuesta and five other council members hosted our council-level KofC Soccer Challenge on the grounds of the parish. Five area youths participated – four more than last year – and given that each participant was in a different age group all five advanced to the District-level competition. The Districts were held at St. Stephen School the very next day, October 3rd. Chizu Egwatu, son of our Outside Guard and Council Committee Director Cornelius Egwatu, won his age group and will advance to the Regionals, to be held November 6th in Tarpon Springs. Congratulations to all!

Saturday Oct. 9th found the Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council well-represented at the District 35 Charity Golf Tournament, at Summerfield Golf Club in Riverview. The proceeds went to benefit brother Knight and former State Public relations chairman Tim Manning, to help defray the cost of expensive medical treatments he was required to receive in the past year. Our council donated $500 to the cause, for which we received a tee-box sign advertising our council, and our own PGK Miguel Molina, knight Michael Garrido and his friend Andy Walzer played in the tournament. Their team played very well – coming in at 3rd place in a field of more than a dozen teams. The day was a success, raising well over $5,000 for Tim. The District plans to make hold a tournament every year, and will select a different cause to benefit each year. Special thanks to PGK Miguel Molina for coordinating our council’s support of the event.

On October 16th, more than 15 of our Knights and their ladies joined our pastor Fr. Chris Fitzgerald and the Legion of Mary at the annual Rosary Rally at the front of the church property along Hwy 579. It was a public display of our devotion to our Blessed Mother, and given some of the friendly toots of car horns we heard as we were setting up – we certainly received approval from some of our brothers and sisters driving by. That same weekend, October 16th & 17th, we joined other parish ministries for the inaugural Ministry Info & Recruiting Weekend or “Ministry Fair” after each of the masses. My thanks to all of you who stayed after mass and spoke with the men of our parish about the difference they can make in their community, their parish, and their family in the Order. We are following up with a number of men who expressed interest in joining the council, and definitely enjoyed some good visibility.

The following Saturday, Oct. 23rd, Deputy GK John Mabe, Financial Secretary Chito Ocampo and I attended the State Deputy’s travelling meeting, “Building the Body of Christ.” He and other State Council officers outlined the State’s emphasis on retaining members in the Order and reinforcing the idea that the Order is a tool not only for serving others, but also for advancing the Gospel of Christ by building the Catholic Church. Their message was well-received by all of the councils represented.

Catching our collective breath, we got to work the very next morning, Sun. the 24th, for our first parish breakfast of the Fraternal Year. While we didn’t feed quite as many folks as we have in the past, we did raise $300 for the council’s activities. Also, as good as our food has been before, our guests said it was even better this time. That should mean good word-of-mouth for the next breakfast, which will be around Valentine’s Day. Sticking with a food theme, a dozen of our knights and family members joined our bi-monthly effort to Feed the Needy of our area. Approximately 90 people received a good, hot meal courtesy of the knights and our parish!

Finally, on the final weekend of the month, more than two dozen knights, ladies and family members gathered at the parish on Friday evening, the 29th, for our monthly Pot-luck Social. There, we recognized September’s Family of the Month, the Coletta family (Jason, Tarah & Ava), and also October’s Family of the Month, the Parker Family (Don & Mary), and October’s Knight of the Month, Richard Brown. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful time of good food and fellowship. We then closed out the month selling tickets after all the masses on Oct. 30th & 31st, for the Nov. 12th Luz Fund Thank-You Spaghetti Dinner. We will sell tickets again the following weekend, and of course at the door. We hope to see you there!

A Personal Thank-You
As you probably have heard, my wife Jean suffered a seizure on October 12th, falling and separating her right shoulder in the process. She gave me and our sons a scare, but she came through with no permanent ill effects and no problems noted in any of the tests performed at the hospital. God has truly blessed us with the best possible outcome, and Jean and I would like to thank each of you for your prayers and support. May Christ bless you all!

November is here!
Although short compared to October’s calendar, I anticipate that November will be another successful month for our council. As an example, we anticipate processing Form 100s to add at least four new members to the council this month – almost half of our adjusted goal!

Of course, the best way to prove a successful November will be to pause for a few days at the end of the month to thank God for all of the blessings he has bestowed on us. Please accept best wishes from my wife Jean, our sons and I, for a wonderful Thanksgiving for you and your family. See you soon!

Brother Knights,

November is the month we remember our deceased loved ones and Brother
Knights who have departed for their Eternal Rewards. Just a week ago we
laid Msgr. John Scully to rest following six decades of service to Holy
Mother Church. He is an example to us of how to Proclaim the Gospel. In the
eulogy, Fr. Bill Swengros mentioned that our dearly departed Brother left a
legacy to St. Stephen Parish for the new church building. What incredible
generosity!

What about you? Have you thought of Charitable Gifting? What about a life
insurance policy that leaves something for the Church or School?

A generous parishioner left the bequeathed the land for the school to the
parish. Have you thought whether a part of your estate should be donated as
a legacy?

Many Brother Knights have chosen to do just that. If you want to meet and
discuss what you could do, let me know.

A September to Remember
Before we look ahead into October, let’s take a minute to review what we did in September. After we all paused to catch our collective breath on Labor Day, we got busy with a few other activities. First, about two dozen knights, family members and members of the parish gathered in the main sanctuary of the church on Saturday, Sept. 11th to commemorate those who lost their lives in the Al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington. Beginning at 8:46am – the time the first of the hijacked airliners hit the World Trade Center – we recited the Rosary. Afterward, parishioners commented that we should do this every year. We will definitely consider it.
Also on the 11th, the Council was called upon to serve coffee and doughnuts to parish members as they completed the important parish survey. And finally, we gathered at the North wing of church on Friday, September 24th, for fellowship and food at the September family social. At the social, we presented many awards, including: A “Past Grand Knight” certificate to our immediate PGK Fil Cuesta. Knight of the Month honors for Brother Bill Partridge and Cornelius Egwatu, for August and September, respectively. August – We celebrated, remembered, served, and said farewell

Members of our council shared some significantly different experiences in the month of August. First of all, we had five council members (Dennis Alfano, Michael Garrido, Tom Kessinger, Jose Quintas, and myself) receive the Fourth Degree at the Tampa Airport Marriott hotel on August 14th. We celebrated along with our lovely wives, who attended a ladies’ luncheon at midday and then join us knights for mass, followed by a banquet. For you Third Degree members in the council – I urge you to take the Fourth at the next opportunity, which will be this November, in Orlando. More information is to come.

Events soon took on a more somber tone, as members of the council joined the rest of the St. Francis of Assisi family in remembering and honoring our former parishioner Paul O. Cuzzupe II, who gave his life while serving with the U.S. Army, in Afghanistan. Council members were among those who paid their respects to Paul and his family along the route of the motorcade carrying his remains from MacDill AFB to the funeral home in Brandon. Many members also attended the visitation and rosary on the 20th, and then the funeral mass and burial on the 21^st. The outpouring of support for Paul and his family from the parish and the community was truly remarkable. I greatly appreciate the members of this council who were able to support Paul’s family through their presence and their prayers.

Last Wednesday afternoon, the 25^th, the council took its turn to “Feed the Needy” with a hot meal of hot dogs, beans, fries and dessert. Ten knights & family members joined the “regulars” from the parish who carry out this important ministry each week. Most organizations at St. Francis take turns, and our council’s turn is the last Wednesday of every other month. I hope to see even more of us present at our next turn, which is October 27^th.

And, as the title of this section indicated, we finished the month with a farewell. Our good friend and Council Director, Tom Kessinger, took his bride Shirley and moved up to Bob Hope Village, in the Panhandle. Tom was the knight who kept us together by organizing our social meetings, producing the certificates for Knight of the Month and Family of the Month, and of course bringing the pizza for after every council business meeting. He also did many other things for us and attended practically every council activity. Now, we need another knight to step up and fill Tom’s shoes. If you would like to volunteer, or know a member who you think would be great in this job, please let me know ASAP! Tom – We will miss you! You are always welcome here, and may God bless you and Shirley as you embark on a new adventure!

Onward – And Upward

As you read this, the council officers and committee directors are making plans for council activities for the remainder of the fraternal year. They will be calling on members to take on a project or two, so please give some thought to what activities you might want to lead or be a part of. If you already have an idea about a project or activity you like, don’t wait to be called – contact me or any of the officers or directors. Our parish is seeing our council as a group that is doing great work. We need your help to keep that work going!

Sad news

On August 29^th the parish was shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Penny Haladay, wife of our brother Bill Haladay. Please remember Penny in your prayers, and ask the Lord to grant Bill and his family comfort and peace.

Off & Running

The Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council ended the month of July with a well-attended Social that featured the installation of our new council officers, presided over by District Deputy Rick Hughes and District Warden Julio Alvarez, as well as our chaplain and pastor, Fr. Chris Fitzgerald. With the installation concluded we now move forward with strategic planning for the rest of the Fraternal Year, as well as other upcoming activities.

First up will be our semi-annual council audit, followed in mid-August by the Fourth Degree exemplification in Tampa, where five of our members will join “the Patriotic degree.” If you are a Third Degree member, I encourage you to take advantage of the next exemplification opportunity, which will happen this November, in Orlando. Planning will also soon be underway for the annual Soccer Challenge and the parish Ministry Fair, among other events.

If you are already involved in the activities of one or more of our council’s committees: Community, Church, Council, Youth, Family, and Membership – thank you! If not, this year will be a great time to get started – even if you can only commit to one. Stay tuned for more information about upcoming events conducted by each of our committees.

Thank you, Grand Knight Felipe Cuesta, council officers, and all of the members of our Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council #14278, for an outstanding Fraternal Year 2009-2010! The multiple awards which GK Fil and PGK Miguel Molina brought back from the State Convention recognized the great job we have all done on many levels, and indicated to many others that we have a strong council. Your dedication and hard work made our achievements and growth possible. Thank you for doing your part!

We closed out the year with a couple of excellent June events. First, we celebrated the Knights’ Memorial Mass at 4:30pm on Saturday, June 5th. The mass was offered for our late brother, Joe Suppa. His widow, Bernadette, was in attendance and greatly appreciated the many knights who attended. On Wednesday, June 23rd, we fed seventy hungry souls at our bi-monthly “Feed the Needy.” We had an excellent volunteer turnout from the council, as more than a dozen knights and their family members worked in the kitchen! Thank you!

As great as 2009-2010 was, we certainly have the ability to build on success and reach even higher heights in this new fraternal year. As your Grand Knight, I will give you my best. I call on each of you to continue to do the same for the council and each other.

Opportunity Knocks
What called you to become a Knight? Fellowship with other Catholic gentlemen? The chance to serve Christ, the church, and the parish? How about developing character in our Catholic youth? Or protecting your family’s future with the Order’s financial products? Or simply the chance to help others in need? Take a look at the opportunities we have for you to exercise those reasons.

Every one of us must properly attend to the needs of our families and our other responsibilities. For that reason, I am very grateful to every knight for his gift of time and talent to our council. However, while most of our members do participate in at least one of our council activities each year – and many participate in nearly all of them – we still need more of our members to participate more often.

Our most vital need, however, is for more knights to step forward to lead specific events or activities. Deputy Grand Knight (and Program Director) John Mabe and I will be working with the various committee directors to reach out to all of our membership about this. My vision for the council is that each activity is led and organized by a different knight, and more than enough knights show up to participate in every project or activity. To achieve this vision, we need you!

So, when someone from the council comes to ask you to help out in this way, please give the idea serious thought. Literally take it to the Lord in prayer. Ask Him how you can best serve Him through the council. He will let you know what to do. Opportunity is knocking. Will you answer?

A Great New Year
The coming year will give us many opportunities to serve our Lord and each other through the Knights of Columbus, and live the values of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. May the Lord bless each of us with the grace to embrace these opportunities, and may he also bless us and our families with health, happiness, peace and prosperity throughout the year!

Time and time again I’m reminded that no man is an island. This year has certainly proved this axiom be true. It has been through the contributions of each of you, through your generous practice of volunteerism and your loyalty to the Spirit of Father McGivney, that our Council has successfully reached the goal of being a recipient of the Star Council Award. This presentation will come from the Supreme Council last in the summertime.

To wrap up our year, we have engaged in charity works providing charity funds to Special Olympics ($600), the Wheelchair Foundation ($300), Morning Star ($300), Tootsie Roll Florida Catholic KofC Charities $(900), and our own St. Francis of Assisi’s Church Building Fund ($350). With respect to vocations, $500 was collected and provided to Eli Castro, our own parish seminarian, as a partial tuition payment. Our Year of the Clergy Recognition Dinner in April, provided our clergy a small stipend totally $500 for their roles and responsibilities of keeping us on the road to holiness. The dinner was a success in great part to your support and our own SFA Women’s Guild. Through your generosity and hard work, we have provided hundreds of hot meals to our homeless and the needy of the greater Seffner/Brandon Community area. You may also recall some of our Charity funds ($600) were disbursed to help one of our own Philippine family member parents ravaged by a devastating Hurricane.

Also noteworthy is the great work our Youth Committee performed for the children of the parish. The children participated in a Soccer Challenge, a Basketball Free Throw, which we took 1st place all the way to the Regional games in Lakeland, FL, where we carried 3rd place. The 5th, 6th and 7th grade children in Faith Formation enjoyed participating and receiving financial rewards for writing some of the most explicit essays on the topic of “What is the true meaning of Christmas?”

You also exemplified the principles of ‘unity’ and ‘fraternity’ in the areas of Community and Council. Many productive and challenging volunteer hours have been given to build Community with four (4) parish breakfasts. No one has ever gone away from working a breakfast without praises and thanks from the parish community. Our dynamic council team brought fun, games, and fraternity to the Council through our monthly socials. We even had a special visit from Santa this year, at our Christmas social. Prior to this social our Church Committee members did an excellent job of ‘Keeping Christ in Christmas’. The Council also advanced the Pro-Life activities by praying the rosary before a the Tampa Abortion Clinic, leading the rosary on one Sunday in honor of parish future mother’s and standing up over 150 white crosses to remind our community to protect our most innocent…the unborn.

Throughout the year we have continually strived toward making a concerted effort to establish a solid rapport with others and by working with as many of the church groups in the Parish as we could. We sponsored a Hispanic Open House for KofC recruiting, participated in Spanish/American Dinner Dance and in the SFA International Soup and Salad Night. Much more work is still needed in this department in order to draw even more Catholic men into the Council ranks.

I recently attended the Florida KofC Annual State Convention in Orlando, Florida with Past Grand Knight (GK) Miguel Molina, five other District#35 GKs, and our District Deputy and Warden. At the convention, I reassured this Council’s very good standing, but I truly believe we can still do better. Brother Doug Murray (FL State Deputy), shared one bit of advice to help guide and direct all Knights, he said to “Work retention and make new members want to stay.” Doug is currently setting up a Retention Committee at State level that will be in contact with each Council’s Retention Committee.

The State Deputy also reminded everyone that councils have five charities to contribute to; they are: Special Olympics, Handicap, Vocations, Wheel Chair Foundation, and Helping Life. This year your Council was recognized with the Division#1 1st Place Community Activity Award and the Division#1 3rd Place Family Activity Award and Division31 1st Place Youth Activity Award. We also received recognition for contributing to the Wheel Chair Foundation. I am also happy to share this great news with you Brother Knights with all our parishers, who have stood behind the Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council #14278 at St Francis Catholic Church. Once again, congratulations for your dedicated perseverance, generosity and all your support that made these recognitions at State level possible.

As I step down as the outgoing Grand Knight, my most sincere thanks go out to each and every one of you, because my past year’s experience has been very rewarding and without you my job as the Grand Knight would have had to depend on “Providence” alone. I have seen, first hand, how our Lord never fails to repay those who have taken Him as a friend. As His friend, you have conformed to His Will and have endured the sacrifices of love He has asked of you. You all get the credit for our successes, I was merely the glue that kept the wheels of ‘Charity’, ‘Unity’, ‘Fraternity’, and ‘Patriotism’ well oiled. I pray for your continued success and health. Debbie and I thank you for the opportunity to serve with you this past year. We are honored to call you Brother Knights and SFA parish friend. See you at the Council meetings.

Brothers, as we approach the end of this annual calendar we should not lose sight that service to others, including our Knights and families, must remain a high priority. The month of April had several significant events that once again placed the Council in good standing before the Parish.

We participated in the Stations of the Cross, kicked-off ticket sales for our Mother’s Day Breakfast, led the monthly Feed the Needy event, and we delivered a smashingly successful Year of the Priest/Clergy Recognition Dinner. Many thanks to our Women’s Guild, who without their help, our efforts would not have had such an impact on our clergy.

Congratulations go to our Knight of the Month, Carl Kosierowski, and our Family of the Month, Chuck and Nancy Mulhern.

The month of May is filled with key events of great importance and your participation will be critical for our continued success. Please respond to the Nomination Committee when contacted. Your contribution to becoming part of the Officer’s Staff ensures our Council’s infusion with new ideas and direction. Later in the month, the GK and PGK will represent you and our award winning Council at the upcoming State Convention. We expect to bring home the “gold” in several categories at this annual convention, to be held in Orlando, FL.

McGivney was the very first insured member of the Order. Most of our
priests in District 35 are insured members of the Order. Why do you think
priests believe so strongly in our programs? They have expressed the
following reasons to me:
  I want to be sure that my family does not experience any financial
  burden when I pass away.
  I want a secure financial retirement.
  I admire the commitment of the Order to Catholic Principles.
  I don't want to be concerned about the safety and security of my
  investments.
  I want to leave something to my parish, the seminary where I studied, or
  a mission that I believe in very strongly.

Elections of officers

During May the nominating of officers for the new Fraternal Year will begin
and during June we will elect our future leaders. Never in our lifetime has
Holy Mother Church and our priests needed the support of the Knights of
Columbus more. Be sure to attend the business meetings in May and June.
Support strong candidates and offer your support to them in the new year.

Brother Knights, we are blessed to have such a great Council of Catholic Men who are willing to step up and make a difference. This past month of March was shrouded in the Lenten Spirit. Along with our participation in the Stations of the Cross, members joined together to pray the rosary in defense of the unborn and in protection of our expectant mothers.

The Council also stepped up to laying out over 400 white wooden crosses to build the Memorial of the Unborn. It was built to remind all Christians of our abdication as Knights, and not merely during Holy Week, to defend the lives of the unborn.

A very special mention goes to Brothers Michael Garrido and Miguel Molina for a very successful Tootsie Roll Campaign. They had a group of dedicated Knights that carried the workload and they deserve our gratitude for making $950 available to distribute to the benefit of the handicapped children and adults of Florida – Special Olympics players.

Please congratulate our new 2nd Degree Knight, Al Doyle, and 3rd Degree Knights: Pierre Mathelier, Alex Cuesta, José Quintas, and Angel Alvarez. We are farewelling Brother Michael Massi (Treasurer) who is transferring to a great corporate job in London, UK in late April.

This month of April is also filled with spectacular service to our community and Priests. Help is always needed for the KofC Feed the Needy on the last Wednesday; our next event specifically set for 28 April. We are also going to need helpers to set-up, tear down, run the libation ‘watering hole’ table, and keeping order at the 30 April “Year of the Priest/Clergy” Recognition Potluck Dinner. We are conducting this event in cooperation with the Women’s’ Guild. Please make sure to participate in honoring our clergy. Finally, remember we are about to kick-off the Breakfast ticket sales for our Mothers’ Day celebration.

In the charity of your prayers, please remember Brother Tim Manning (our State Public Affairs Representative and Past District Deputy) when you pray for our ‘sick’. Brother Tim needs our prayers for a speedy recovery.

Someone once said, “Good judgment comes with experience; experience comes with poor judgment.” Up to now, this council has been blessed with more good judgment than poor judgment. Our course to a successful year is laid out and all we must do is hold steady the helm to reach the end. We will meet the requirements for Star Council, but is that enough? To be more than a good Star Council we need to reach for the Columbian Award. This year Supreme has upped the ante with a need to participate in four (4) Pro-Life events. Currently we have two on the books and we need two (2) more. Brother Carl Kosierowski has devised one for Holy Week and I have another. The week starting on Palm Sunday the Council has been given permission to place small white crosses in the front of the church, representing the lives lost to abortion. A rosary and Mass will follow placing the crosses. The second event is selecting a Sunday in March or April to lead the rosary prior to each Mass (one weekend) – dedicating it to all pregnant mothers and in defense of our defenseless children. A group of Knights will lead these rosaries. With these additional Pro-Life events, the Council can submit a full Columbian Award package. Will you join me brothers?

I would like to acknowledge all my brother Knights that were instrumental in making the Valentine’s Breakfast a success. Also, once again, our Council fed the Seffner Community Homeless and many said the hot dogs, baked beans and fries were delicious. Brother Tom Cummings delivered a fantastic presentation on Fraternal Benefits at our potluck social. The bread and fish sticks fed the many and no one left hungry or unwise about the KofC Fraternal Benefits. The Council contributed to Fr. Mick’s Fortieth Anniversary Celebration on 12 February and he was happy to receive our “Green Gift”.

Congratulation goes to Kevin Erlendsson who rushed to 1st Place at the District level and 3rd Place at the Regional Free Throw Competition.

Our Tootsie Roll collection is going well with the second event scheduled for 6 March. Please continue participate in this activity for the benefit of the handicapped children and adults of Florida.

Athletics, especially long distance runners, credit their abilities to complete the race to what is commonly known as catching the second wind. Doctors attribute this phenomenon to a heavy rush of hormones, specifically: adrenaline.

Well Knights, this Council is halfway through the year and we have ‘caught our second wind’. January 2010 gave us a fresh start to review our next six months of Charity works. We announced the winners of the Christmas essay: (First Place: Douglas Herrick, Second Place: Kimberly Curley, and Third Place: Ramona Shoy-Parker). Congratulations boys and girls! Our program also included raising kids’ interests in sports by carrying out the Annual Basketball Free Throw Contest. This year’s winner in the ‘10 Year Old’ category is our own DGK’s grandson, Kevin Erlendsson.

As a special request from our Deacon, we provided meals to the needy in January and they were grateful. This month we are scheduled to do it again.

As a cooperative measure, the Council joined in with the Spanish Group to sponsor this year’s first Church Dinner and Dance. This merger was profitable and the libations hit the spot.

Beginning in February we will start ticket sales for the Valentine Breakfast. The sign-up list is out; please show up and contribute – as a sales person and on the cooking day.

The Council is a main player in Fr. Mick’s Fortieth Anniversary Celebration on 12 February. Please attend the Mass and join us for dessert.

Lent starts on 17 February with Ash Wednesday and the Women’s Guild wants to join hands to set up a “Fish Fry Friday.” If you wish to participate or lead, contact the DGK. We are scheduled to work at the end of the month to Feed the Needy again, please don’t forget!

I want to start my report with a ‘BIG THANK YOU’ to all who helped to make our Christmas Social such a pleasurable success, to our wives and Brothers who are such marvelous cooks, and especially for all the behind-the-scenes work offered by our very own Santa, Tom Kessinger, and his #1 Elf, Shirley Kessinger. Do you know who sewed and then stuffed all of the Santa gift bags? You guess it, Shirley did. Everyone’s teamwork added to the Christmas joy we shared as family and friends.

Half of the Holy Days (Holidays) of Christmas are behind us, but the best are yet to come. The arrival of the Three Magi (Los Tres Reyes) is a big feast celebration in Latin America. Many Parents wait until 6 Jan (Three Kings Day) to handout the gifts to their children. Truly reemphasizing Christmas and the Nativity scene where our King of Kings is honored with the presentation of Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh. We, as Mary’s Knights, welcome the Prince of Peace and step up to do His work on Earth. This coming year we will be facing some new challenges which include two breakfasts, the Tootsie Roll Sales, our monthly ‘Feeding the Needy’ dinners, recruiting, and also honoring our Priests, just mention a few. Working together, as we did in 2009, is our ticket to success and our #1 way of showing Charity to the Community, as well as Brotherhood to each other.

As we said goodbye to 2009 and Father Time (Año Viejo), we welcomed three new members: Brothers Alan Gray, Al Doyle, and Alberto Osuna into our Council. We still need to make sure that our new Brothers are assigned to Committees and meet the Directors to ensure their helping hands are available, when needed. Remember, in order to advance to 2nd and 3rd degrees you must be assigned to a Committee, and be attending the meetings and events.

Someone once said this about Florida summer weather, “wait a few hours and it will change again”. That represented the spirit of this Council during the month of November. We were all vigorously engaged in performing charity works for the benefit of others almost every hour of the day throughout the month. The breakfast in honor of our Veteran’s was a success even if the number of customers was 20 percent less than expected. The proceeds were split between Fr. David Czartorynski, to help defray the cost of his activities for the veterans at the VA Hospital, and the Church fund. Next, I’d like to share with you about the “Membership Blitz.” It concluded with our Open House and we signed up two new knights and received one new prospect. Our ranks have grown by six (6) new members since the beginning of this membership drive. I’d like to extend my many thanks to all those who participated and provided great ideas to bring new members into our ranks. I also remind you – my Brothers - that recruiting is everyone’s responsibility and that one-on-one contact has proven to work more effectively than group events. We welcomed Brothers Christopher Thomas, Richard Brown and Fernando Nieves, as new members into Council #14278. We also extend our congratulations to Brothers J. Quintas, V. Lukban, R. Mathelier, A. Cuesta, A. Alvarez, and R. Brown for advancing to the 2nd Degree held at St Stephen’s Catholic Church. Our honoree for this 2nd Degree was Fr. Christopher Fitzgerald…do you know who he is and what he represents to this Council?

So what’s the news about the Charity Golf Tournament, you ask? Well that too was a success in producing lots of fun and great outdoor natural scenery. The event’s profits have helped generate money in support of the Hillsborough County Special Olympics and the Wheel Chair Foundation. In addition, the spirit of charity kept on giving during the Thanksgiving week as members of this Council stepped up to replenish the empty shelves of the Church pantry. A pickup truck loaded with canned vegetables and two of my favorite food staples, “peanut butter and jelly,” was delivered by our DGK to the pantry volunteers bringing smiles to all those awaiting in line.

Council members are currently planning the sales schedule for the “Keep Christ in Christmas” merchandise to be sold after all our Masses in December. If you have not signed up yet, please stay on after your regularly attended Mass and help out. Our Christmas Social will be very special and I expect everyone to attend since it is at the Church on 18 Dec. Please RSVP to Tom Kessinger. Also, don’t forget that the Knights are on the Church Calendar for hosting the ‘Feed the Needy’ program on 30 Dec and volunteers are not only most welcome, but very needed.

Many thanks to every brother knight who has participated in our membership blitz through the month of October. We have spoken to more than a dozen interested parish men, and may end up with 4-6 new members before we are through. Great work!

Remember, though, that most new members are recruited one-on-one, so if you know of anyone who may be a good candidate for membership (18 years or older, living the sacraments, and - if married - married in the Church) tell them about the work that we do. If they are interested, have the complete a Form 921 and give it to myself or any Council officer, and a member of the Admissions Committee will follow up with them - and you.

Remember, too, that we are capping off our membership blitz with an Open House, at Noon on Sunday, November 15th, in the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Hall. So, invite anyone you know who might be interested, and have them bring their wife and family. Refreshments will be served, and they can find out much information about the order's activities and benefits. Council members are also encouraged to attend (please wear your Council shirt).

November is the month when we remember in a special way those Brother Knights who have passed on to their eternal reward. All of our councils will honor their memory with a Memorial Mass. Did you know that the 8AM Mass everyday of the year at St Mary's Church in New Haven is celebrated in remembrance of our past Knights? It is also a time to remember them in our prayers at our meeting for all the good they have done for our local councils.

Beneficiary Forms - I have just completed my 145 death claim assisting Brother Knights, their widows and families. Most of the time they have no idea of who the beneficiary of their insurance policies, their 401ks, Roth IRAs and IRAs are. When did you last review yours? This is especially important after the death of a spouse or after any marital changes. Why not check your paperwork? Now?

Graded Death Benefit Whole Life - Are you aware that you can now apply for a Whole Life Policy with the Order, even if you are uninsurable? it is a great way to provide for final expenses. Want information, give me a call.

The challenge of new discoveries is exciting and very rewarding. There was much excitement in the eyes of our Brother Knights as we launched our “Membership Blitz” in the month of October. Results are still coming in, but I can assure you that our annual goal will be met. But we will not stop there! I know that each member Knight wants to contribute, but some may not know how. It is simple, soon we will be having an Open House and all one has to do is approach a Catholic friend or acquaintance and invite him to the Open House. In conversation, tell him of how the KofC has helped you give back to the Community or brought you closer to your family, or how the Knights will provide peace of mind during times of your absence. You may even be surprised at how much weight your enthusiasm carries in providing assurance to your new prospective member in his decision to come and sign up. Our Open House is scheduled for 15 Nov so there is still ample time for you to invite your friend(s). If you still are not sure as to what to say, then introduce your friend(s) to our Membership Director (Mr. Wilbur) or myself and we will speak on your behalf. We have recently welcomed Brother José Quintas and my son, Brother Alex Cuesta, as new members.

We had our Council Social early in October, at Tom and Shirley Kessinger’s home. What a thrill it was to be invited back for lots of family fun and the hamburgers Tom cooked were truly scrumptious! Shirley put out a great party and there were quite a few choices in foods to eat, but I busted my sugar levels, with pleasure, in sampling all the desserts. Thank you both for such a wonderful time! We also completed the 2009 Soccer Challenge by participating in the District event where young Chizu Eqwuatu took Second Place. Congratulations Chizu! What’s more, we received our first invitation from the SFA Women’s Guild to help setup and tear down the equipment at their Annual Children’s Halloween Fest. The games and food were great, but the smiles and excitement on all the participating Parish children’s faces was priceless. Our Feed the Needy, day event, was again a total success and my sincere thanks go out to our Brother Cooks and Clean-up crew. In addition, we congratulated Cody Snipes, our newest SFA Eagle Scout, at his Eagle Court of Honor with a framed certificate along with a $100 bond to go towards his upcoming college expenses.

The Council has also started its second planned breakfast ticket sales in honor of our Veterans; and the breakfast is scheduled to take place on 8 Nov. If you have not signed up yet, please stay on after your regularly attended Mass and help out. Our Chaplain, Fr. Fitzgerald, and Deacon Jerry extended an invitation for our Council to participate in the church’s International Soup and Salad event by providing the libations, with the opportunity to make a few dollars in the process. I can assure you that our drinks were very much appreciated, but the food was an even greater success. Stay tuned to the Council announcements and upcoming events. Bear in mind, you are the Council and your contributions are the ones that describe the quality of the work we do…. and from where I stand the levels of energy expended and the good works completed thus far are excellent! Faith is defined as “the assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). This past month my faith in you, Brothers, has grown tremendously. We have come together in prayer in defense of defenseless unborn children; pulled together to sell over $1,100 in breakfast tickets; delivered a “class act” Back to School breakfast; and delighted our Faith Formation children with a unsurpassed “Soccer Challenge” event with winners and hot wieners for all participants. Our conviction of the future is very bright and you have made it so.

Our preparation for the “Membership Blitz” is on full power, led by our Brother John Wilbur. He is going to need help from every one of us during the 1 Oct thru 8 Nov timeframe. We must also be prepared to reach out to men across the Parish to also recruit one-on-one. If you feel uncomfortable handling the one-on-one situation let John Wilbur, John Mabe, Ron Ziegler or myself help you deliver the KofC message. By way of a good data point, Fr. Rafael Martos has agreed to establish a KofC Round Table for his Spanish Community. I am actively seeking out the Director and Assistant Director positions prior to submitting the documentation to Supreme. The Council also presented Fr. Martos a financial gift in commemoration of his 17th Anniversary as a Priest.

Congratulations are in order to Michael and Jason who completed the 3rd Degree exemplification on 12 Sep in Port Richie. Additionally, we welcome Alejandro Cuesta and José Quintas as new KofC members, having completed their 1st Degrees at Nativity Church on 15 Sep 09. Brother Richard M. Brown was also approached to reactivate his membership in the Knights. Three additional Knights will be attending the Pinellas Park 3rd degree Exemplification on 3 Oct.

Our Council Social was a success with the variety of “potluck” dishes brought in by our honored wives. We appreciate all their hard work and the sacrifices made to keep our Catholic men on the right path. Lots of fun was had by all; including the children who played board and electronic games.

The August Family of the Month was Dennis and Doreen Alfano and our KofC of the Month was John Angelo. September FOM and KOM will be announced at the Thursday 1 Oct meeting, 7:30 PM. Please come and recognize these Brother’s for their contributions.

November 1st will mark my 5th Anniversary as a Field Agent. I want to thank all of the Brother Knights who have warmly welcomed me into their homes and shared their hospitality with me. I have made about 2,500 visits and handled 143 Death Claims. Four questions stand out in my mind from my experiences:

WILLS - While everyone acknowledges the importance of them, only about one in four Knights have wills, living wills, health care surrogacies and powers of attorney in place. Why do so many leave these important documents unprepared? What about you?

PLAN - What's your plan for when you pass away. Eighty percent of the time the Knight will pass before his spouse. Yet few can articulate a plan for preservation and growth of assets. Few can name who would act as a trustee if necessary. Few have analyzed in any detail how their family would be protected from an economic point of view. What about you?

INSURANCE - Fr. McGivney founded the Order on the principle of Unity , that all Knights would be insured members. Only about 55% of our local members protect their families through the Order. I'm curious about why so members are so loyal to their commercial insurers, especially in view of the events of the past year, and not to the Knights of Columbus. What about you?

PRIESTS - I find it interesting that 75% of the priests who live in my area are insured members of the Order. Why is their participation rate so much higher?

Worthy Brothers

We are seeking runners for a unique cross country run from Marco Island to Zephyrhills. The purpose of this run is to generate interest among those who believe that life should be protected from conception to natural death. This will be an opportunity to raise funds for K of C Charities-Helping Life fund. The run will start on Feb 13th in Marco and end in Zephyrhills on Feb 17th 2010. We will be running in a relay fashion and what ever day works for you can be the day that you run the course. Runners will have support vehicle and the support of local Knights including meals and overnight lodging.

God created the heavens and the earth, land and sea, animals, plants, and man and saw all was good; then rested on the seventh day. How does this relate to our Service Program, you ask? Well simply said, as a Council, we find ourselves still in the planning and creation stage. Our Installation of New Officers was held on the 26th of July. With us was our Worthy Chaplain, Father Christopher Fitzgerald, and our Worthy District Deputy, Mr. Rick Hughes, who presided over the ceremony, accompanied by our Worthy District Warden, Mr. Nick Turco, who guided our New Officers through their ceremonial parts.

My thanks to the family members and friends who attended; their presence provided their husbands, fathers, and friends a high-five level of support. A special thanks also goes to Tom and Shirley Kessinger for coordinating our social of tasty sandwiches, chips and dip, dessert and refreshments.

Your new officers held a second planning meeting to establish council structure and committees to do God’s work. We are still at the beginning stages and are still looking for more good ideas, so please be receptive.

Our current Service Program covers the full fraternal year. It includes youth activities, council development, community service events, and fraternal events. We have placed Christ back in Christmas and set a goal to recruit four or more new members with three new members with insurance.

Through all of these new efforts, ‘communication’ is vital to our success. To aid in spreading the word, a Newsletter will be published monthly, a Web Blog will be updated monthly, and you will have a copy of the Annual Events Calendar to refer to.

Remember, any sacrifice for Christ in this Council will receive not only heavenly rewards, but also earthly recognition.

The new Columbian Year is off to a flying start. Your officers have been
installed and trained and are ready to move your Council and the Order form
Good to Great, the theme established by our State Deputy Doug Murray.

This month we celebrate the anniversaries of the birth and death of our

St. Stephen Parish has started a weekly meeting of CT (Career Transition)
Ministry on Monday nights at the school on Boyette Road. I have visited
several meetings and it is very worthwhile for anyone in the market for a
change of career or employment. Check it out.

On June 19th for the 34th consecutive year, the Knights of Columbus has
received the A++ designation from A.M. Best. Standard and Poors continued
its AAA Rating. What about your insurer? How is it rated after the
financial debacle of the past year? Go to the A.M. Best website and check.
Many holders of Universal and Variable Life Policies will be in for a rude
surprise when they see that their cash values in these policies have
eroded.

Brother Knights:
As newly elected Grand Knight of the Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council #14278, I would like to express my sincere gratitude in the memberships’ confidence in my abilities to move the mission of the Knights of Columbus forward for the 2009-2010 calendar year. As my first official act, I want to extend my deepest appreciation to our past Grand Knight team (Miguel and Laura Molina) plus Miguel’s entire supporting staff for an outstanding year of well-executed charity and fraternal activities that culminated in receiving the Star Council Award for a second year. Additional congratulations are in order for all newly elected staff members and committee directors.

I have started this new year with two planning meetings at my home to develop a yearly calendar and a proposed budget. I will also meet with committee directors separately to design the council program and projected annual activities. I encourage all council members to visit our website at http://kofc14278.blogspot.com/ to get the latest activity and degree exemplification dates.

Finally, I urge all members to step up to volunteer for any of the five committees and assist the director in performing his ‘labor of love’. Remember the four principles of the Knights of Columbus Order (charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism) and your commitment as Catholic gentlemen to help a brother knight and family in need or distress. I look forward to understanding your needs, concerns, and meeting your families at our monthly socials. {A REMINDER: our officers’ and business meeting dates will change beginning in September 2009. Meetings in July and August remain unchanged: (business meetings (3rd Monday of the month) and officers’ meeting (the Thursday prior to the business meeting). Our New Officers’ Installation is scheduled for 26 July after the 11:00 Mass. Uniform for inductees is coat and tie. Please join us in this solemn occasion. Your RSVP is required, to Chito, by noon on Saturday, 25 July.

The end of our second year is almost here. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this past year such a success.

We are well on our way to making Star Council again. We have until the end of June to try to recruit new members.

Congratulations to: John Angelo, Dennis Alfano, Michael Massi, and Don Parker on their 2nd degree on May 16! The next 2nd degree will be on July 18 at St Stephen School.

Welcome to our new Brother Knight Chris Toro.

The Mother's Day Breakfast was a big success with about 190 people served. It went a lot smoother and all were happy. We handed out ring rosaries to all the moms that came to the breakfast. We have a few of them left if you want one for a small donation.

The Tootsie Roll Drive went well at the Publix on MLK from 8:00 to 3:00 on 5/30/09. Thanks to those who volunteered their time -- John Mabe, Jason Coletta, Robert Voor, Michael Massi, Cornelius Egwauta, and Chito Ocampo.

Mother's Day Breakfast ticket sale is scheduled for May 2&3. Call me and let me know the times
you can help. At the breakfast we will try to have two shifts to try to give you time to go to
church with your families.

If you plan to help the Baghdad Roundtable with supplies for the orphanage, school, and maternity
hospital, give them to Darryl or call him at 863-398-2007 so he can pick them up before May 8.
The Tootsie Roll Drive will be at the Publix on MLK from 8:00 to 5:00 on 5/30/09. We need lots
of help, so please volunteer for a time that is convenient. The more volunteers we get, the less
time each of us will have to work.
We have three candidates who will be at the next first degree. Thanks to all that came to the Open

Brothers,
We are in the home stretch, there are just two months left in the Columbian Year. If your Council
is to earn STAR COUNCIL, we'll need a few associate members to become insurance members by
June 30th.
Fr. McGivney's goal was every member an insured member and during his lifetime that was a
reality.
Unfortunately, today many Knights do not chose to protect their families and support the Order.
In May's Columbia there is an article about a priest who after serving the Church all his adult life
who left his estate to the Knights of Columbus and Holy Mother Church.
What about you? What can you do? What will you do?

Chaplain's Report

The Year of the Priest
“The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.” So said St. John Vianney, the beloved Curé of Ars, in his “Catechism on the Priesthood.” The saint, whose own heart was so filled with the love of Christ that it remains miraculously incorrupt 150 years after his death, will be declared Patron of all the
Priests of the World by Pope Benedict XVI during a special Year of the Priest to be celebrated by the universal Church beginning June 19 – the
solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Sacred Heart liturgy emphasized Jesus’ total self-gift – an outpouring of blood and water – and his role as the inexhaustible source of the springs of
salvation. Renewing – and celebrating – the priesthood with that in mind would benefit the entire Church, and its growth in the fundamental virtues of
faith, hope and charity.
The faithful priest, united to the Heart of Christ, declares the truth by who he is – a sign of contradiction. His self-offering points to God’s
love in a world of sin. The authenticity of a holy priest who knows his identity is rooted in his conformity to the Heart of Christ confirms
the faith of countless people entrusted to him.
A priest united to the Heart of Christ lifts our minds and hearts beyond this present world. The very person of a priest conformed to the
Heart of Christ inspires us to hope, because we see in his life of self-surrender the overturning of worldly self-preservation, inspired by his
goal of eternal happiness in heaven.
During the Offertory at Mass, we are invited: “Lift up your hearts!” In lifting our hearts up to the Lord, offering ourselves to God as full
and active participants in the Eucharistic sacrifice, we declare a readiness to imitate the Heart of Christ, so full of love that he was lifted on
the cross for our sake.
Growth in charity means learning to give. Fortunately, in all the sacrifices that leave us feeling emptied, we have the love of the Heart of
Jesus there for us, present in his sacraments to lift us up.
As St. John Vianney said, “When you see a priest, you should say, ‘There is he who made me a child of God, and opened heaven to me by
holy Baptism; he who purified me after I had sinned; who gives nourishment to my soul.’”
We should thank God for our priests and pray for them.

Culture of Life Fund

“Last August, the delegates to the Annual Supreme Council Meeting reaffirmed the Order's longstanding
commitment to the Church's teaching on life and marriage by unanimously approving Resolution 302, which
established the Culture of Life Fund and a special assessment of $3.00 per member. It was anticipated that this
Fund would support a broad range of initiatives that advance the Culture of Life. I am happy to report that
the Fund has done just that. Two programs, one to assist men and women to cope with the traumatic
aftereffects of abortion and divorce and one to help men be better fathers have been introduced. To date, the
response to these initiatives has far surpassed our expectations.

In addition, our financial support last fall was vital to the passage of constitutional amendments protecting the sanctity of marriage in California, Florida and Arizona. Today, 30 states have such amendments. In January, we implemented our new initiative helping state councils provide pregnancy centers with ultrasound machines. The Supreme Council partnered with local Knights to put this life-saving technology in the hands of pregnancy centers in both Iowa and Florida. On a national level, the Board of Directors recently voted to provide financial support to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for a newly formed Task Force whose purpose is to promote the Church's teaching on marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The Knights of Columbus has always been deeply committed to promoting racial equality and defending religious
liberty as a basic civil right. In the United States today, the abortion lobby has indicated a desire to move the
so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA) through Congress. This radical piece of legislation would not only
expand abortion "rights," but also force medical personnel, morally opposed to abortion, to violate their consciences
and participate in abortions. In Canada, the Parliament has witnessed the introduction of a private member's bill
that would legalize euthanasia across the country. On these and a host of other issues affecting the Culture of Life,
the Knights of Columbus must be ready to educate the public about the need to support policies and legislations
that protect human life from conception to natural death.

Please remember that contributions to the Fund from councils or individual members remain in the country of
origin and will only be used for projects in that country.”

The Season of Lent is a Matter of the Heart-Lent is a call to remember that it is our hearts, our spirits, that really matter and make us what we are. For the spiritual heart to be made anew it first needs to be broken. Then it can be resurrected in a new way and with a new life. To refresh and cleanse our hearts we need to break them open before the Lord and pour out to Him our sins and failings so that He can heal and strengthen our spirits. The first exhortation of Lent is to repent. We are to look into our hearts, honestly admit our sins to the Lord, and trust in His healing mercy and forgiveness. The Sacrament of Reconciliation especially gives us the opportunity to allow the Lord to cleanse and refresh our hearts. The heart needs not only to be healed, but strengthened. Almsgiving, prayer and self-denial are the means by which the heart is made strong. Lent calls for a renewed commitment to our love for God, ourselves and others through prayer, charity and self-discipline. This commitment to renewal of the heart should be our guide for the Lenten Season as we seek practical means of making these three virtues part of our daily lives.

Brothers,

Once again the Knights of Columbus Insurance Programs have reached a new level of success in 2008 with more than $70 billion of coverage now in place on our members and their families. In a year when many commercial insurers have struggled, our Fraternal Benefits have continued to grow. We remain one of only five Major Insurers with Standard and Poors AAA rating, A.M.Best A++, and the IMSA seal. We remain focused on Fr. McGivney's vision of protection of our families. Our annuities have seen unprecedented growth as the equity markets have faltered.

I have now handled 136 Death Claims as an agent. Oh the lessons I have learned about Estate Liquidation in that process. Most executors have little or no guidance, don't have an inventory of assets and are overwhelmed with trying to organize the necessary information.

Make it easier for your executor, or if you are to be the executor of someone else's estate, act now.
Prepare an Important Information for Survivors and Beneficiaries document listing information about assets, key contacts, location of important papers.

Brother Knights,

I would like to extend a welcome to our newest member Michael Massi.

I want to thank all the Brothers and their families who supported our events last month. The weekend sales of Christmas cards and magnets are going very well. The breakfast was a big success. Everyone was pleased and had good things to say about the breakfast.

The recommendation was made to host them more often. How does this schedule sound for the next one in February for Valentine’s Day, then April before Easter, May on Mother’s Day, and June for Fathers Day?

We had about 79 people at the social and Mrs. Trabulsi’s presentation on the Relics of the Saints. Thanks to the Women’s Guild for providing desserts. The leftover desserts were given to the needy dinner.

EMPRESS OF THE AMERICAS
We are Honoring Our LADY of GUADALUPE with a mass and procession. There will be Mariachis and dinner will be served after the celebration. Hosted by St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

CHRISTMAS WITH OUR VETERANS

Come out and spend some time with our Veterans on December 13, 2008 at the
nursing home "Haley's Cove" located at the Haley Veterans Hospital Facility. The Knights of Columbus are going to have a pizza party for the 80 residents. We will be starting at 11:30 A.M. at the Nursing Home. The Knights will give each Vet a white T-shirt, underwear and white socks. We will have Santa Claus there to help us with the presents. The St. Stephen's Choir will be in attendance singing Christmas Carols. We are looking for white T-shirts sizes 1x thru 5x, underwear sizes 38 thru 44 waists, socks can vary in size. These items will be gift wrapped and handed out to each Veteran. If you would like to donate items, please get it to me by December 3rd, so that we do not over buy. If you are planning on attending, please advise me so we can let the nursing home know how many to expect. Parking is scarce, so allow yourself plenty of time.

If anyone would like to bake cookies, they obviously would be welcomed by the Vets.

Let's not forget that God has given all of us this opportunity to help those who have served to protect this great Nation of ours.

Brothers All,

I want to wish each and every one of you and your family a very special and Merry Christmas. I have truly enjoyed working with you and watching your council grow over the past year. Your council is very special to me because it is so young and new. Like watching your child grow; I watch your council grow. I've seen the struggle of learning what the officers duties are and how to perform them - to building a soccer net. I am humble to join in to help feed the homeless and proud when I presented the Shining Star Award from Supreme. I have witnessed a new candidate become a member and had the privilege of knighting those at the third degree. I've seen the fellowship between yourselves at the socials and extend your charity, your unity and fraternity towards others at family night, selling Christmas cards, the breakfast and the night when the relics of the saints were displayed. Yes, my brothers, I am proud – and so should you, to belong and to be associated with Fr. Rosmini Council and the Knights of Columbus. I hope each of you have a blessed, happy and healthy new year and that I continue to see you and your council grow more and more.

The Advent Season is upon us and once again we prepare to celebrate the Incarnation of Our Lord. We believe (our FAITH) that Christ is the Son of God; that His coming assures us of the HOPE of everlasting life and that the LOVE he expressed for us and urged us to share is His everlasting gift to us. During this season of preparation, let us measure our work as Knights by the Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity.

Our Founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney had a deep and abiding FAITH in His God. His HOPE was that he could encourage Catholic men to act in LOVE supporting one another. He sought everyday to know, love and serve God through his service to the Catholic community. We are his legacy. Let us keep the beacon shining brightly as we Keep Christ and His message in our

Congratulations to Ted Domey and Darryl Mummert on receiving their 3rd Degree.

Fundraiser and recruitment on Nov 16, KofC Breakfast. We will be selling tickets and recruiting after all Masses on Nov 8th & 9th and 15 & 16th.

The Christmas cards and magnets have been received. We can sell them along with the breakfast tickets. Make plans to be at all the Masses, if possible. Let me know at which masses everyone will be available to help. We need as many brother Knights helping. I will be working on both Saturdays and so cannot be there.

We will be cooking for the needy on Nov 19. On the last Newsletter I left our District Deputy Tim Manning off when thanking everyone that helped. I would like to thank him now for helping with feeding the needy.

The next social on Nov 24th will be a Relic on the Saints presentation by Mrs. Trabulsi. Mrs. Trabulsi will talk about the relics she will bring for display. We will have refreshments afterward.

As we begin the month of November let us remember our Brother Knights who have passed on along with those spouses who have entered into their holy reward. Remember it was because of such tragedies that Fr. Michael J.
McGivney was inspired to start the Knights of Columbus. What if each family were to remember our Founder by praying for his canonization?

We have been overwhelmed these past months with Brother Knights moving money from their IRAs, 401Ks, 403bs portfolios to the safety (A.M. Best A++ and S&P AAA) of the Order. No Knights have lost any of their principal and their annuities continually grow.

Effective October 1st, the new 800 Series of products has been issued. Premiums are lower as the new mortality tables are in force. This would be a good time to review your situation.

There is now a Guaranteed Issue Whole Life Policy available to those who would otherwise not be insurable. It can be issued through age 65.

The popular Term to Age 30, the lowest premium (about $3/monthly) child policy will be phased out. If you want it you must apply before the end of the year.

If you want to make deposits into or start an IRA or Roth IRA for this year, let me know.

In view of the market conditions, the importance of your annual Fraternal Review is paramount.
Call me and let me know when you would like to meet.
